“I want to be a superhero, Daddy. And I’ll be the bestest superhero of all!”
“I’m sure you will, son. I’m sure you will.”
That exchange is what comes to mind when we think of all the teen superheroes running around in bright tights throughout the world of comic books isn’t it? Some kid sitting on his parent’s lap dreaming about the fantastic and innocent world of superheroes, and imagining themselves as one. Unfortunately, superheroes aren’t real, and even if they were, it ain’t all fun and games, kids.
Open up a comic sometime and you’re sure to see a number of adults in ridiculous tights parading around, stopping bad guys, and preventing intergalactic warfare. But you’ll also find a bunch of kids trying to do the same thing. And this is what the general republic refers to as “for kids”? A bunch of children running out and fighting crime mostly with no supervision. Yeah, okay.
While it may be dismissed as easy escapism that is relateable to kids on the surface, when you delve a little deeper into the happenings in those stories it gets a little dicey. And there is no better example than the events that led to Marvel’s Civil War crossover. A super team consisting of teenagers, the New Warriors, unwittingly, yet irresponsibly cause the deaths of themselves and a bunch of innocent school children, thus changing the face of the entire Marvel Universe and how teen superheroes are viewed.
Going back in time a bit, Captain America used to have a teen sidekick in Bucky. When Bucky was killed, Captain America decided teen superheroes weren’t such a good thing. Perhaps this was an answer to DC Comics: Titans and other teen sidekick superheroes in the DC Universe. After all, almost everyone in the DCU has a teen sidekick of some sort. But Marvel isn’t without its share of teen heroes either. From the New Mutants, to the Young Avengers, and even to Spider-Man before he grew up, teen superheroes have been prevalent for years.
But is this something we should really be pushing as kid literature? Sure, the escapism is great, and I don’t mind that at all… within reason. But pushing real world style heroes without showing the consequences is irresponsible. Fortunately, both Marvel and DC do well not to skirt those controversial issues. DC Comics: Titans members have been lost, kidnapped, injured, and even killed, as have many Marvel teen characters as mentioned above.
As long as the repercussions of the actions are shown, the actions can be highlighted, I guess. Just be careful not to let your children tie blankets to their backs and jump off the roof and all will be well.

Hercules (marvel Comics) $69.64 Hercules is a fictional character that appears in publications published by Marvel Comics.
