The Green Lantern is one of DC Comics’ first super heroes characters. His first appearance was in 1940 in the All-American Comics #16 as engineer. Alan Scott who was created and drawn by Martin Nodell with writer Bill Finger. The Green Lantern was a contemporary Aladdin who wore a magical ring which could conjure up anything the GL could think of. He was dressed in green and red and known as the Golden Age. He quickly became one of All-American Publications most popular and admired super heroes earning his own series, publishing numerous times a year beginning in 1941 and ending in 1949.
The first super hero team to welcome the Green Lantern was the Justice Society of America. Because Alan Scott earned his own series, something Flash did as well, he became an honorary member. Alan Scott as the Green Lantern appeared on several covers as well as Flash and Wonder Woman who were among fellow Justice Society members and the most popular of the gang from the publishers. The All-American Comics soon merged with another company, National Comics who published the likes of Batman and Superman.
Alan Scott was re-imagined as test pilot Hal Jordan in 1959 and was part of the Corps – a space based police association under the direction of the Guardians of the Universe. The Guardians were little blue men wearing red robes that held vast mental knowledge and powers who were placed in charge of protecting the enormous Corps on their planet, Oa.
Hal Jordan joined up with the premier Justice League of America and became one of the most popular characters the company had. In addition, Green Lantern had one of the most complex set of secondary characters and villains the company created. By introducing more members in the Corps, the DC Comics were able to interchange and come up with new and additional GL Corps and more villains for them to battle, such as John Stewart and Kyle Rayner who each battle their own demon or villain for the sake of good verses evil.
Every time a member needs to ‘recharge’ himself, he must go back to the main lantern to get more power for his ring which helps him fight the bad guys. It is no longer a ‘wishing’ type ring. It helps the Lantern fight evil and danger to protect the citizens of wherever he might be, and the source of the giant green lantern is on the planet Oa.
DC Comics have made the Corps somewhat of an enigma and therefore more people know of the actual lantern Corps that they carry with them or the rings than what they do and why. Their world is very complicated and sometimes hard to explain but true fans of the GL character have stuck with the characters and know which ones are which and who is the most popular among the top three Corps – John Stewart, Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner, each battling a different demon within themselves and a different evil within the world.
